The scarcity mindset

I have noticed a peculiar practice among the older generation of my family. They hate “wasting food”. They will overeat even if it isn’t in their best interests. Most have metabolic disorders and eating more is bad for them. This doesn’t apply just to food. They also hate giving stuff away even if they will never use it again. This is conditioning from a different age when everything was scarce. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, food wasn’t scarce for me but consumer goods were. Even I was conditioned to finish my food without wasting anything. It took me a long time to understand that excess calories were bad. Our body is also conditioned from an age when calories were precious and will store it as fat. The scarcity mindset forces you to think that life is a zero sum game and one needs to maximise gains. A high flying career with high pay is great but is it worth the stress and lifestyle diseases? Life is about tradeoffs and the earlier you get it, the better.
